Ci-gît l'été

ci-gît l'été
Here lies the summer. It's over, now I have to wait a year for summer to come round again. It makes me sad. Just a word about the French: ci-gît is the traditional and ancient way of writing "here lies". This epitaphe is usually found on French gravestones.

That's all rather gloomy, I apologize for my lack of enthusiasm for the coming Autumn tomorrow. Autumn is bringing rain and colder temperatures. I'll get over it, but for now, BOO HOO!!!

It's supposed to be 95 here tomorrow, so I think I'll save my gloom for a few days. I'm late for work every day, trying to water enough to get my perennials through the drought.

Which reminds me, in a perverse way, of when I lived in Minnesota and one year it snowed on the last day of summer. Which turned out to be a pretty accurate predictor of the coming winter.

I have to go along with you, I hate the cold and I am thoroughly miserable from October till April, even more so because I am in the UK :-( Diane

Brrr ! Brrr !
Bon courage !
Bises !

Oh I'm so sorry your lovely summer is over, Dedene. Thanks for the explaination of the phrase "here lies". We're also entering winter but it's welcome here, cooler weather, never cold! I'll be sure to post lots of sunny photos for you to come and thaw under. Blessings and hugs. Jo

Yes, I am also sad about the winter coming. I do have a good reason though - we don't have a tumble dryer in this house, nor room to place one. Oh joy - a winter of steaming wet clothes.

Angus, you're not helping!

Jeanne, a drought? How awful! Hope it rains soon.

FFL in the Charente, Thanks, I need someone to understand me!

Jo, when I need a ray of sunshine, I'll be sure to come and visit!

Shanster, I thought it might creep some of you out. In fact, the tomb is the tomb of Saint Cecilia.

French Fancy, OMG! How to you ever get your towels dry? I'm so sorry because I know how long things take to dry in the winter.

Translation of Claude's comment:

Welcome to the club! We can hold each other's hands because I'm like you, I'm so sad at the end of summer. I hate to think that I have to wait months and months before the sun comes out again.
It's beautiful here now but tomorrow for the first day of Autumn rain is expected and the cold arrives. Brrr ! Brrr !
Courage!

Claude,
Merci de la compagnie pour ma misère. Nous avons fait ramonner la cheminée et la chaudière, et le bois est coupé.
Maintenant, il faut trouver des autres occupations.

Simo, Merci beaucoup!

Being something of an autumnal Bear, I love this season. (Maybe that's part of my dark, foreboding nature.) We've already had below-freezing temperatures at night for more than a week.

Condolences on the loss of summer. But there's be another one in a few months.

On attend l’automne avec impatience ici car il fait si chaud, encore 35 cet après-midi. Mais il faut penser a toutes les jolies couleurs qui vont venir sur les arbres.

We look forward to the fall impatiently here because it's so hot, still 35 this afternoon. But we must think of all the pretty colors that will come on the trees.

I know just exactly how you feel! But think of all the nice things autumn brings - foodwise I mean: delicate wild mushrooms, partridge, pheasant, wild duck, hare, deer, wild boar ... offering a lot of culinary possibilities and pleasures! Martine

I'm in Canada and I know the feeling well, but there are lots of wonderful times ahead, it's all what you make of it!

I am sorry Dedene! I know a lot of people get affected by the weather and the lack of sun. (You need to buy those special bulbs). Maybe now is the time to plan a trip to the Southern hemisphere. The Great Barrier Reef or an African safari sound really great.

I'm wishing for the cooler weather ... it was 90 here today!

And what exactly IS that in the photo????

For those of you who wonder what's up with the woman in the picture; I found this on a liturgical blog about Saint Cecilia.

Stefano Maderno (1576-1636) carved this emotional portrayal of the saint after her body was moved in 1599 to its current place under the main altar. This is how her incorrupt body was found lying before it was moved. The axe marks were visible in her neck and her arm was outstretched with three fingers extended (which was, of course, explained as a testimony to her faith in the Triune God). While at first glance the statue is graceful and flowing, a longer examination reveals the awkwardness of her position. Carved into the floor in front of the altar is this statement:

Behold the body of the most holy virgin Cecilia,
whom I myself saw lying incorrupt in the tomb.
I have in this marble expressed for you the same saint
in the very same posture.
