We're lucky to have electricity. Many of the small towns around us don't have any at all, and haven't since yesterday evening. The cold is supposed to continue and will drop to -6°C tonight.
I'm only sending out about 15 cards. But they are going all over the world.
How many cards to you usually send out each year?
I also made a yummy Pumpkin Orange Cake because I was bored and because Monsieur Titi wanted a dessert. I doubled the recipe because I still had 2 cups of pumpkin purée in the freezer from last year. I also used chopped dates instead of raisins and put the batter in a rectangular cake pan instead of the loaf pans suggested.
Ingredients:
1 large orange (peel and all except seeds)
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 1/3 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/3 cup water
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup chopped raisins
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
Cut orange into wedges, and remove seeds. Place orange, peel and all, in a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped; set aside.
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the pumpkin, water, and the ground orange. Mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir into batter just until moistened. Stir in nuts and raisins. Spoon into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes, then remove from pan, and cool on a wire rack.

Wow, you live in a winter wonderland. It's just grey and cold here. If I get 15 cards sent out on time this year, I will be on a roll!
This looks amazingly cozy, warm, and tasty and I can't wait to make it this winter! (I'll let you know, of course). As for the Christmas cards, I'm the horrible woman who doesn't send them anymore, unless it's a handful to friends or family that I think may need a lift. I just tell friends to not waste stamps or paper to send them to me (since I'm never at the same address for Christmas anymore anyway) and to give the money to charity instead. So now, I do the same. I knooooowww, I'm that girl.
The recipe looks super. We have a large pumpkin here ready to go, so I'll try it...something new for the sweet tooths at coffee time...
As to cards, only about twenty to post to people without internet and e cards to the rest, having found a super site thanks to Trisha in France...Jacquie Lawson.
I can't believe it is already winter !!! Since when does it snow in November here ??? The weather all over the world keeps getting stranger and stranger... go figure. I thought global warming was the problem. Feels like we are entering a new ice age !
Could go for some piping hot pumpkin cake to warm up with.
:-)
I now only send Chritmas cards to the few people who have not got email. Everyone else gets email cards and the money we save goes to Lifeboats.
It looks so pretty there but I just hate it!!! I do not like the cold. Diane
I tried to send a comment re trying the recipe..
Have now tried it, and the assembled company really loved it.
Yes, I owned up it wasn't my recipe...but no one was surprised at that.
What a beautiful snowfall! I can say that because it is yours not mine!
I know, maybe it's not very convenient when it snows heavily, but it looks beautiful. Sorry, I guess I'm very selfish.
Ah! You're trying to make me feel at home in France. The pictures look delightful. Being without electricity, on the other hand, is not a lot of fun. I hope that problem is fixed fairly promptly, and that you don't experience any difficulties.
Good day to you, good morning to all of your, How are you? Very nice, very romantic, here is no snow, but you know what, as it hung in the air. a cake in the picture, mmm ... I'd gladly tasted, I love cake!
Wow, that's a lot of snow! Very beautiful though. :)
I left a comment...about how good the recipe looked but I must have pressed something or not pressed something and it disappeared.
Still, in the meantime, have tried the recipe and the sweet toothed round the table want it made again!
Nice photos you have there Dedene! I should imagine you have even more snow today? We've actually had snow settle here this afternoon and the streets in the city are totally impratical. How well are the roads cleared where you are?
As for Christmas cards, I absolutely love receiving and sending proper cards and keep them all much to my Husbands dismay. I probably send out about 20 - 30 each year and in the past when I've had time I've hand crafted a lot of them.
I like the idea of you cooking when you're bored, it's something I would like to try but I never have the ingredients.
Enjoy the Christmas card writing!
I don't like cold weather and can only deal with snow for 1 day or 2 but it sure is beautiful when the trees are covered with snow.
(I was checking out your "live feed". You have people visiting from all over the world).
Bises !
So pretty! No snow here... we had lots of wind yesterday tho. 12 degrees F with 30mph wind. Brrr. I'd take the snow over wind any day.
We usually send out 75-80 cards a year!
Stay warm! Love that cake.
Oh, yumm! I'm always looking for another pumpkin recipe. Does the orange go well with it, and were you happy with the new additions you made?
The snow looks gorgeous in your photos, and Ken and Walt's.
I'm watching the Lighting of the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center on TV right now... and no Christmas card writing for a week or so... I probably send about 25, but only a few to France :)
Judy
I love Christmas Card time! I send about 25 and will get them posted this Saturday. I'm like you, my cards fan out all over the globe!
J'ai mis un commentaire hier et je ne le vois pas.
ça va c'matin, tu n'es pas congelée ?
On a vu des images à la télé d'Orléans, c'est imporesionnant ce qui est tombé et en plus le gel par là-dessus.
Bon courage !
It is winter already and every season has its own beauty. Beautiful post dear Dedene!
Hi Dedene,
Yum, Yum. Too bad that you don't need someone to put on stamps :)
I am going to challenge myself(when I can get around again),to bake. I found a cranberry cake recipe, and then there is Alsatian style gingerbread!
Good for you for the snail mail cards. I no longer send any out. The few really close people are called on the telephone, and just a few virtual cards are sent.
Wishing you lots of patience for the "dégel".Though the cozy feeling is a plus side of that :)
Oh ugh. Christmas cards. Good for you for getting them out before Christmas. I always justify my mid-January sending of them with "well, I had to write about our Christmas vacation in there!"
You have a lot more snow than we have - we just got a smattering this week. (Not as pretty, but I'm quite happy not to be snowed in!)
I usually send maybe 50 cards, but I'm trying to make them all myself this year, so we'll see... :)
Is it sad that I'm a wee bit envious of that? I know it's probably a bit of a hassel for you all, but, it is SO gorgeous to look at!
I have yet to send out Christmas cards. I know... shame on me.
Fly, thanks for trying the recipe out and that your guests liked it.
I was really happy with this cake recipe. I didn't change it much except for the dates. Even Monsieur Titi loved it.
Beatrice D., Yes I do understand French and even can write it under torture. Don't worry about writing in English.
I'm glad to see that many of you keep the tradition of hand-written cards (or even typed). I'm sure the people who receive them enjoy them a lot.
That was quite the snowfall! I certainly never saw anything like that when I was living in the Loire valley area.
We had quite a cold snap with some snow, but nothing near like what you had. It seems to be over now...at least for the moment.
Last year we had snowfalls from December until June (yes June...) so I'm wondering what this winter will hold!
