En Avril...

It's only the 6th of April and we are having early summer weather already. It's wonderful, but a little suspicious. The plants and trees are about 2 weeks ahead of schedule, everyone is madly buying and planting geraniums, but all the old-timers know that there'll be another freeze.

Monsieur Titi plays ping-pong with one of the "haut-responables" of a large supermarket near here. He was saying that the store is betting on another frost, so that everyone who already bought geraniums and other flowers will have to buy them again.

In France, there are sayings for almost everything. Here's one for April:

En Avril, ne te découvre pas d'un fil.

Which simply means, no matter how nice it is outside, don't think it's summer. Keep your clothes on and your summer plants covered.

What's the weather like where you are?

Same here. It's 20°C and hazy sunshine. The plants in the garden are going mad but there is a saying in the north of England ;"ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out", which roughly means don't put you woolly vest away until the end of May !!

I just asked Fred on Saturday to run to the nursery to buy some geraniums to plant before his parents arrived from France on Monday. He said, "It's too early." I got upset. But now, after reading your post, I guess the French know. I'll try to listen to him next year.

Amazing weather but last year we had a frost mid-may which did most gardens no good! I am also suspicious. A neighbour has given me some large tomato plants from his green house but I am wondering where I can put them for protection!!! Diane

Jean, I guess every culture has similar sayings for planting times. The northern English saying is very interesting, I'd never heard it before.

Mark, I'm not sure where you are exactly, but if you live in a temperate region, you're probably best off in waiting to plant your geraniums.
Hope you have a nice visit with your folks.

Super chaud ! Dedene, super chaud !
Bises.

Not too long ago you were writing about the cold! Here, we are approaching temperatures in the 50s with a high of 70 predicted for Sunday! I'll take it!

We won't put geraniums in until May.

Same here ... gorgeous sunshine, temperatures in the lower twenties (20 tot 23 °C), clear blue skies, but ... le fond the l'air est encore très frais ...:) Martine

Here the rainy season looks like starting early...but not to worry.
Warm sunshine in the morning...and then the downpours start in the late afternoon.
Plenty of time to do everything you want to.

I can't say I'm sorry to have left the Ice Saints of May behind me, either!

Sunny and warm in Provence!!

In western Canada, we've still got a couple of feet of snow on the ground. Sunny with some cloud, and a high of 6°C predicted for today.

Sunny and warm here too -- about 24° today. Glad to see you're back on the blogging scene! I haven't been too regular, but try to keep plugging away...

Spring is still struggling to arrive in Chicago! There are signs of hope though. And it's supposed to be 80 on Sunday.

Ciao Dedene! I was just saying how the weather here in Tuscany has been "suspiciously" gorgeous for weeks - as in "what's the catch?" Just rolling with it for now...

The weather is always nice in SoCal (except when it rains [if we are lucky, 10 days out of the year]). But we could still have frost until mid-April.
Springtime in Europe is so wonderful but better wait until May because "En Mai, fait ce qu'il te plait".
